Dear Fourth Grade Families,
Thank you so much to everyone who helped make our Halloween party such a wonderful success! It was so much fun to see all of the costumes and the excitement that the kids had for trick-or-treating later in the day. A big thank you to Carianne Lirot for coordinating the party! We really appreciate it! This week in reading we have been using our non-fiction skills in a research team. Research teams are learning about different weather related events, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and tsunamis. We have been practicing determining the main idea, text structure and summarizing the text. In math we have been working on multi-step word problems. These problems can vary in operation and length. We have been using our problem solving protocol to help determine the big idea of the problem. It is very important that students visualize what is happening in the problem before attempting to solve. One strategy that we used this week was to draw a picture to help dissect the problem. We will be having our Unit 2 post-assessment on Thursday, November 10th. Students are taking home a study sheet this weekend. This unit has a lot of vocabulary. Students do not need to be able to define the words, but they need to know how to recognize which strategies to use for solving. Have a great weekend. Dear Fourth Grade Families,
I have to say a big thank you to the class for persevering during the heat this week. We have been able to use rooms that have air conditioning to make it more tolerable. Students have handled moving rooms and the heat really well. READING In reading we are starting our year off reviewing many of the basic but most important fundamental skills. We have talked about how to find good books and started doing book reviews for our peers. I have encouraged students to find an author they enjoy and find other books they have written. We have also been talking about the importance of summarizing while we read. Students are working to determine the most important aspects of the part, section, chapter and book to create a summary. Summarizing is a very challenging skill and we will continue to work on this throughout the year. MATH I am very excited about the mathematical thinking that is taking place in the classroom! Students are using what they have learned in the math videos and pushing themselves to answer challenging questions. After students have demonstrated they understand the 4th grade concepts, my objective is to push them further. This week we have been investigating place value. Students are understanding that each place value is ten times as great as the place to its immediate right. For example, 400 is ten times as great 40. HOMEWORK Thank you for working with your child to help them get started on our math video website. www.playposit.com is a great tool for implementing the flipped math classroom. The results of the questions are sent directly to me and allow to me plan for small group instruction. Please let me know if you have any questions. Monday night through Thursday night students have a math video, fact fluency practice (if needed) and 20 minutes of reading. Friday night through Sunday night students have 40 minutes of reading. Have a great weekend! Welcome to room 1! I am so excited to be back at BES and to start a new year. I wanted to give you a chance to get to know me better.
I had a wonderful but very busy summer! I was able to spend time with my husband, Kenny, my son KJ and my daughter Allie. KJ is three and a half and Allie is 17 months, it is exciting to see how fast they are growing. Our family spent a week camping at Lake Winnipesaukee this summer. We had a great time boating and playing outside. We visited the beach and many playgrounds too. Also, I am a big sports fan. Baseball is my favorite sport, and the New York Yankees are my favorite team. As a family we also enjoy watching hockey and cheering for the Boston Bruins. We have a five year old Chihuahua, Maltese mix named Crosby. For those of you who follow hockey our dog is named after the "Next One", Sydney Crosby. Dear Fourth Grade Families,
Next week is spring break! I have heard about a lot of the exciting plans for the time off. I hope everyone has a great week. In reading we have been reviewing many of the skills we have learned as readers of non-fiction text. We have been revisiting author’s purpose and how this impacts our understanding of the text. Students are looking at the key details in the text that help us to understand main idea. We have also been reviewing the different structures of non-fiction text. In writing students have been writing their opinion essay, “Should there be zoos?” Students chose a side and have been using evidence to support their claim. Students have reviewed the structure of an opinion essay. We also learned new elaboration techniques and craft moves to lift the level our writing. In math we have been working on our ability to solve complex problems. We developed a problem solving protocol that students can use when they encounter difficult problems. The focus is on reading the problem several times and referring back to the information provided. Have a wonderful week. |
