We are participating in a bananagrams tournament!
Groups are working on a genre project to highlight all of the different types of writing we have completed this year. The authors in room 1 have done a great job showing off their skills. Dear Fourth Grade Families,
This week in reading we have been working on building our foundational non-fiction literary comprehension skills. We have practiced previewing the text before reading, looking at the headings and subheadings to try to think what the text will be about. Also, we have practiced envisioning as we read non-fiction to help us understand what we are learning. Students also practiced monitoring as they read to make sure it makes sense. These are important skills that will help students identify the main idea of the text. In writing we have been working on our note-taking skills, following a boxes and bullets format. Students are asked to identify the key details and determine the main idea. We have worked to develop main ideas that are our ideas, instead of just the topic. For example, we have been studying gorillas adaptations, the main idea of the section is that gorillas have adapted to their environment in order to survive. We have been practicing writing main idea paragraphs that have a main idea and supporting details. In math we took our first practice SBAC assessment. Students practiced logging into the system and taking a test on the computer. I was very proud of how hard the students worked and the effort they showed. Additionally, we have been reviewing for our fractions and decimals assessment. We will begin reviewing for our winter benchmark assessment that will occur the last week of January. Have a great weekend. Dear Fourth Grade Families,
We have adjusted nicely to our familiar school routine! It was wonderful to hear all about the exciting adventures that the students had during the holiday break! I hope that you enjoyed your time together. There was nothing better than seeing the joy in my children’s eyes when they opened their presents and spending time with our family. In reading we started a new informational unit. Students are going to be working on non-fiction reading skills to help them better understand text. We have talked about the importance of previewing before we read, looking at the headings, subheadings and text features. Students were taught to summarize as they read to help build meaning. Also, we have been working on note-taking strategies. We used the information from our previewing as a guide to structure our notes. These are great skills to practice at home with your child to continue to build their non-fiction reading abilities. In writing we are learning about expository essays. Students are working on understanding the structure of these essays. The students are taking home their graded literary comparison essays. We completed these essays at school in December. I am very proud of the thinking they did while writing these essays. We are working on decimals during math. Students are understanding how to interpret and compare decimals. We have been talking about how place value helps us to better understand decimals. We have been focusing on tenths and hundredths. We will have a math assessment, Friday, January 15th. This assessment will include equivalent fractions and decimals. Have a great weekend. |
