You can access the reading schedule and book club contract on my blog page. In social studies, the research partnership work is looking just like I imagined and hoped that it would. Students are having meaningful discussions about their southeast research and applying what they have learned to connect outward to other research topics about the southeast region. They are also thinking across their topic to deepen their understandings within their topic of choice. The first few students have started drafting their projects, and all students should be writing next week. Check out your child’s work on Google Classroom. I took a bunch of photos during a moment when I stopped and stared in awe at the “magic” that was taking place. In science, Students are in the middle of studying energy conversions. The latest project is a multimedia presentation involving research about large sources of electricity. We still have open slots for our winter party on Valentine’s Day if anyone wants to help with easy clean up or run a short game/craft. Dear Families,
You have been invited by Ken Talbot to sign up for "February Party on Valentine's Day." Please click on the button below to view the online sign up sheet if you would like to assist or contribute to the party. -K. Talbot Sign Up Students are welcome but not required to exchange Valentines during the party, but they should bring a valentine for all 18 students on the list. Students should minimally put each students first name (spelled and capitalized correctly) on each card and sign each card legibly Behnke, Charlotte Dabkowski, Gianna Dallas, Clark Favalora, Jake Ferguson, Brody House, Ryan Hughes, Nathan Hussain, Safina LaRosa, Audrey Lisitano-Rode, Camryn Malangone, Massimo Mandolfo, Ethan McLaughlin, Mia O'Rourke, Alexander Piela, Josie Sidlow, Aoife Soucie, Noah Stephens, Riley Grace Hello Families,
Happy New Year! We are continuing our reading with nonfiction. Students are applying what they have learned as they read with partners in social studies, so they can discuss facts and build ideas about the Southeast. The Southeast Region of the United States is unique, and learners are asking questions about the geography, history, civics, and economics of the region to help them deepen their understanding. You can talk to your child about what they are researching or see current work on google classroom. In science, we have started our PLTW (Project Lead The Way) unit on energy conversion. I have included a picture on my blog page of students working on a bicycle project with the VEX building kit. Students have been thinking about transfer of energy from potential, or stored energy to kinetic, or energy of objects in motion. A link for a skate park website that we used is available on the Grade 4 Welcome Weebly page. K. Talbot Hello Families,
Students did a terrific job last week sharing their research about different national park landforms in the United States. I got some pictures, but they weren’t quite “blog quality”. We are going to finish up the last of our “hands-on” projects for the “Changing Earth” science unit by engineering some model solutions to erosion issues that we investigated in the schoolyard. Students will complete a final task to investigate fossils and determining the age of layers in the earth next week. Our next science unit will be a PLTW (Project Lead The Way) experience that I will co-teach with Mrs. Johnson. Students will learn all about how energy is transferred in this physical science unit through investigations and design challenges. In social studies, researchers have completed their work for the Northeast Region including the Mid-Atlantic states. Most students completed two essays. The depth of knowledge demonstrated by a majority of the essays met my high expectations. I strongly recommend looking at your child’s work by logging into Google Classroom. Students will share their research with classmates soon. Our nonfiction reading has progressed to the second unit. Students are using strategies for understanding informational text by questioning contradictions, extreme language, number facts, quoted words, and word gaps. In January, we will return to fiction and do the first whole class shared reading of the year with the book, Hatchet. Students can even listen to chapters on Youtube to vary the way they access the text. If you want to send something in for the winter pre-break party, which will be a small reward for the students hard work to be held at 12:15 on Friday, December 21, please use this link to go to the sign-up. (I appreciate all thoughtful notions of the holidays, but would really love donations made to worthy causes, a book/game for the class, or maybe home-baked goodies or kid-made cards, crafts…) Report cards are going home on Friday. Let me know if you have any surprises or questions. Thanks for making this a great and successful marking period for the students! -K. Talbot |
