Thanks for wearing green, to go green with us today! A representative from All Waste came to explain how to recycle properly. We are looking for ways to make our school greener! Dear Fourth Grade Families,
This has been an exciting week at school. We had a wonderful Veteran’s Day assembly on Tuesday. The 4th graders did an outstanding job honoring the Veteran’s. I was very proud of them as they recognized our nation’s heroes. This week in reading we finished a mini-research project on weather. Students selected a weather topic as a group to research and worked together to determine which questions they would answer. After researching their question, students presented their new learning to the class. We discussed what a strong presentation would look like; volume, eye contact, teaching voice. In writing we finished our personal essays and used our skills to write a persuasive essay. The students did a great job thinking of a thesis statement and three reasons to support their claim. Watch out they all have a thesis to change someone’s opinion! In math we have been learning how to multiply numbers, 1 digit by 2 digit and 2 digit by 2 digit. There are a lot of steps to these skills and it often takes a lot of practice to be successful. Please check my blog for additional resources and practice. At the end of the week we have been using our multiplication skills to solve word problems. Have a great weekend. This Friday we will be using the skills we learned during the pesonal and persuasive essay until to do an opinion writing prompt. Students are encouraged to plan ahead. This is an example of how to solve two digit by one digit multiplication and three digit by one digit multiplication. Please feel free to practice multiplication examples by changing the numbers. Dear Fourth Grade Families,
Thank you to everyone for a great Halloween party! The students had a fantastic time dressing up and enjoying each other’s company. We had another great lesson with Ms. Nash developing our social skills. The students were challenged to think about mean behaviors they have used. We also read a book to help think about mean behavior and the different perspectives of each character. This week in reading we started an information research project. Students are working in groups to research a weather topic: hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis or earthquakes. The expectation is that students will use multiple sources and synthesize the information. We have been reviewing the skills that we learned during the first part of the unit to read non-fiction well. In writing students have been working on drafting their opinion essays. They have collected evidence through micro-stories and lists to prove their reasons. Students have been using a mentor essay to help them to guide their writing. We are now studying the difference between personal opinion essays and persuasive essays. In math we have been transitioning between math units. Students were able to reflect on their math post-assessments. They will be taking home their scores soon. We started a new unit on multi-digit multiplication and division. It is important that students practice their basic multiplication and division facts. Have a great weekend. |
