Happy Friday!
I’m so happy to report that we are now underway with our second social studies unit which focuses on the northeast region of the United States. Today, students will be reading selected texts online to select and get the “gist” of topics for northeast geography. Next week, students will continue the research process on a northeast geography topic of their choice.
In science, we are on our way to solving the “Case of the Grand Staircase”, which is about the peculiar landforms in a national park in Utah. Students will be performing investigations in weathering, erosion, and energy transfer. We are planning to share some science activities with our second grade buddies in Ms. Atwood’s class. Since both 2nd and 4th grade study erosion, we will take a hike on the nature trail during the next week or two.
I am amazed at how far students have come with reading this year. We have been studying character interpretation in our read-aloud mentor text, The Tiger Rising. Yesterday, students evaluated evidence from text in a debate about whether the characters should release the tiger. Some of the goals for this unit are, describing how a character is complicated, providing evidence that shows a character has changed across the text, summarizing relevant events and ideas, and synthesizing the message to the world or theme.
Fact practice has been going well. Our new fact assessments like the one students will have today, contain multiple formats for multiplication and division. In our practice, I’ve seen many happy proud faces from students that are getting faster and faster with multiplication and division. Expect a fact report soon that will show which multiples your child should practice next.
Our Conferences will take place October 24 and 25, Wednesday and Thursday. If you have not yet signed up for a conference, here’s the link to the sign-up.
Remember, Picture Day is next Tuesday, October 9, the day after our Columbus Day holiday.
