Dear Families,
This is only the seventh day of school, and I feel like I’m learning so much about these kids. For the past three days, students have switched classrooms and teachers during writing, math, and social studies & science. I’m getting positive feedback from both students and teachers about science & social studies as well as their writing and math classes.
I wanted to reach out to you regarding reading homework expectations. In addition to reading done in school, students should be reading a minimum of 20 minutes each night, six days per week. On weekends, students should read at least two out of three nights. A student might take Friday, Saturday, or Sunday off from reading homework. At the expected reading rate for fourth graders, students should easily complete 2,000 words of reading, which can vary between about 10 and 20 pages. I have helped many students figure out how many pages to read during an independent reading session. The most important homework students do is independent reading. We do the reading log in class when each book is completed.
For math, Mrs. Barse will require that students do an online activity starting soon.
Writers will have access to their writing online through Google Classroom and Google Docs.
In social studies, we are reviewing map skills in preparation for our studies of the geography of U.S. regions.
In science today, we began studying ecosystems and had a Kahoot quiz in the computer lab. Next week, students will assemble a soda bottle terrarium and aquarium to research organisms and elements of an ecosystem.
