Students are beginning to draft their opinion essays. This is a stepping stone toward the persuasive essay. Students have been collecting mini-stories and lists of examples to use as evidence for each reason that supports thier thesis (opinion statement, claim, big idea - It goes by many names.)
I noticed that all of the students needed additional support connecting evidence back to the thesis.
Today, I modeled a paragraph revision about the thesis, "Spending time with your parents is important". We took out sentences such as, "I got ice cream." We added a sentence about how Mom screamed when a baby goat did something on her shoe. Also, we tied up the paragraph with a statement about priceless funny memories showing why it's important to spend time with your parents.
I will be working with students to end each mini-story with a connection to the thesis and reason that they are writing about.
