Today we continued our work of subtraction with regrouping. This is a challenging skill that needs lots of practice! Please continue to practice at home. Dear Fourth Grade Families,
This week has gone by so quickly! It was so great seeing many of you Wednesday night at Curriculum Night. If you were unable to attend, please download our PowerPoint presentation from the Grade 4 website. As readers we have continued to discuss important places to stop and think in our reading. We discussed “words of the wiser”, where the character gets good advice from a wiser character. Students should think, ‘what lesson is the character going to learn?’ We also investigated a “memory moment”, where the author uses a flashback to tell about an important event. It is important to stop and think, ‘why is this memory important?’ In writing we have been busy developing our characters and planning for our realistic fiction stories. We discussed how important it is to have a clear picture of who your character is before planning or writing the story. The character should be believable with struggles, motivations, as well as internal and external characteristics. In math we have been working understanding the place value system and that moving one place to the left in the place value chart will increase a number ten times. Students have also been learning how to use the standard algorithm for addition. I hope you have a great long weekend! See you on Tuesday! Good Afternoon!
Please remember that tonight is curriculum night! We will meet in the All Purpose Room (Cafeteria) at 7pm. Mr. Larson will be giving a short presentation. At 7:30, the 4th grade team will be giving an overview of the 4th grade experience in the music room. There will be conference sign-ups, so please bring your calendar! Fall conferences are Wednesday, October 28th and Thursday, October 29th. Spring conferences are Wednesday, March 2nd and Thursday, March 3rd. I look forward to seeing you tonight! Dear Fourth Grade Families,
It has been a great week getting to know the students in room 1! We have done a lot of community building activities to help foster a positive learning environment. It is really important to me that all of my students feel safe and cared for while they are in school. We spent the first week and a half talking about C.A.R.E.S. This acronym helps students understand what it means to be respectful and to be a positive member of our community. C- Cooperation A-Attitude R-Responsibility E- Empathy S- Self-Control. I told the class the most important thing they can learn this year is how to think! In each aspect of the school day it is important that students develop the ability to think deeply about their learning and raise questions. This will be a theme running throughout the year. In reading students are learning about the different places where it is important to stop to think. We are investigating 6 “signposts” which are places that the author has left clues for us to investigate. When students are able to notice one of these signposts the next step is to stop and think using guiding questions. I will provide more information about the signposts so these important skills can be practiced at home. In math we have begun our unit on multi-digit numbers. Students have been learning about place value, comparing numbers and rounding. Please see my earlier blog post to help your child practice rounding at home. As writers, students were introduced to the genre of realistic fiction. We talked about the elements of the story; characters, setting, problem, events and solution. It is important that students realize that the fictional books they read and the fictional stories they write have these story elements. I hope you have a great weekend! Mrs. Barse We have been working on understanding rounding in math. I have taught the students a poem to help them remember the steps of rounding.
Find your number, Look next door. 4 or less just ignore (leave the underlined number as is) 5 or more add 1 more (add 1 to the underlined number) Here are some examples to practice: 432,983 round to the nearest 1,000 _______________________ 834,531 round to the nearest 10 __________________________ 234,912 round to the nearest 100 ________________________ Please continue to work on this skill at home! Today we talked about empathy, thinking about how someone else is feeling. We read the book, Fly Away Home. Students were asked to find examples in the text where the main character showed empathy for others. We also discussed how we can demonstrate empathy in the classroom. One example that was discussed was how we react when partners are chosen. Ask your child about this conversation, it was a great discussion. We ended the lesson in the computer lab, typing about our experiences with empathy by putting ourselves in someone else's shoes.
